Advanced Pathfinders Intern: Emmanuel Jeffers

For the past two years, Emmanuel Jeffers has been an intern with the Computer Science for All team as both a Pathfinder and Advanced Pathfinder. A fan of robotics and programming, he is leaving this summer to embark on his college journey at SUNY Polytechnic Institute where he is planning to major in computer science. We asked Emmanuel to share some thoughts on his experiences with computer science and CS4All.

How did you become interested in computer science?

I became interested in computer science back when I was a sophomore on my robotics team. My robot needed programming, so I took it upon myself to program it, and it was a fun experience for me. When I was in middle school, I never even thought about computer science, now it is all I ever think about. I learned about what computer science is through research, and knowledge from my mentors, teachers, and internships.

What do you find interesting about computer science?

I like that computer science can open the door for you to create something that people can use in their everyday lives.

What have you learned from your time as a computer science student?

I’ve learned about the ways computer science impacts lives, as well as skills such as problem-solving.

What advice would you give students who are on the fence about learning computer science?

I would tell them not to be intimidated or discouraged to learn computer science. If they really desire to learn, then they should not doubt themselves.

Why did you decide to apply for Pathfinders?

I decided to apply because I believed that applying to this program would prepare me for the professional world.

How has your experience in Pathfinders helped you be better prepared for college and a career?

Because of the experience that I gained through Pathfinders, I feel more comfortable going into the next stages of my life, I feel like I have got the skills needed to tackle college and life after college. I would tell other students to absorb everything that they can from this program.

What have you learned from your experience as an Advanced Pathfinder that you will take with you as you move forward with your college and career plans?

I have learned the importance of cooperation, scheduling, and being confident in the actions that you take. I believe that because of the Advanced Pathfinders program I have gained the knowledge that will help me get through college and succeed in my career.
