Research shows that students benefit from being taught by teachers with similar life experiences who help create a positive learning environment and leave a profound impact on students’ grades and self-worth. Male students of color make up 43% of the city’s public school demographic, while only 8.3% of the entire teacher workforce is made up of Black, Latino and Asian men. Let’s change that statistic. NYC Men Teach, in collaboration with CS4All, presents the Men of Color Lunch & Learn to bring together male teachers and students of color for a day of computer science activities. Participants will hear from speakers focused on building community, introducing “Hidden Figures” in tech and increasing Black and Latinx representation in CS.
The Men of Color Lunch and Learn will feature a number of special guests, including Google’s Jason Thigpen, the Men of the NFL Alumni association, and the Magic Cool Bus’s Justin Shaifer. We encourage you to bring a fellow male teacher or students you mentor.
